Reserving parking for your move

On moving day, the van needs to park right outside your door, at both the old and the new address. In Belgium this usually means applying to the municipality (or city) to reserve the space and put up temporary no-parking signs.

Reserving parking for your move

Why reserve the space outside your door?

  • Less carrying: the van parks as close to the entrance as possible, so the job is quicker and your furniture is safer.
  • No double parking: the van does not block the street or stand on the pavement, which can mean a fine and annoyed neighbours.
  • A lift needs room: a furniture lift is set up at the foot of the building. Without a reserved space, it often cannot be used at all.
  • No time wasted: the crew starts on time instead of looking for a space.

How applying usually works

Every municipality has its own procedure, but the main steps are similar:

  1. Apply to the municipality (mobility or public roads department, police or an online form, depending on the municipality), for both the departure and the arrival address. If they are in two different municipalities, apply to both.
  2. Give the date, the times and the length you need: the length of the van, plus extra if a lift is planned. Your mover can tell you how many metres they need.
  3. Apply in time: depending on the municipality, you need to apply anywhere from a few days to more than a month ahead. Apply as soon as your date is fixed, especially at the end of the month and in summer.
  4. Have the signs put up in time: they must be in place in advance, often at least 24 to 48 hours before, so that cars already parked there can be moved. Depending on the municipality, either its services put them up, or you rent and place them yourself.
  5. Pay the fee: prices vary widely between municipalities, depending on the length, the duration and who places the signs.

In Brussels, an extra authorisation may be needed on some regional roads. Rules, notice periods and prices differ from one municipality to the next and can change: always check your municipality’s official page before applying.

The rules in your area

For many municipalities we have gathered the procedure, the notice period, the cost, who places the signs and the official link on the area page, in English. Each page shows the date the information was checked on official websites.

You apply yourself

The parking permit is always requested by you, from your municipality (at both addresses): your mover does not do it. Apply as soon as your date is fixed, then say in your Movzo message how much length you have reserved and who places the signs, so the mover can plan moving day.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I apply for a parking permit?

It depends on the municipality: from a few days to more than a month before the move. Check your area’s page and apply as soon as your date is fixed.

Who puts up the no-parking signs?

Depending on the municipality, either its own services put them up, or you rent and place them. Each area page tells you which.

Do I need a permit at both addresses?

In principle, yes: the van needs a space at the departure and at the arrival address. If they are in different municipalities, apply to each one.

How much does a parking permit cost?

Prices vary widely between municipalities, depending on the length, the number of days and who places the signs. The details are on your area page.

Can the mover take care of it?

No: you always apply to your municipality yourself. Then say in your message how much length you have reserved, so the mover can plan moving day around it.
